Monarch Weather Weekly: October 13, 2024

Tropical Activity Persists

A cluster of showers and thunderstorms are fighting to stay organized in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic this week as the system progresses west. The environment is not conducive to tropical system growth, but should these storms survive and work farther to the west — things will change. Monarch Tropical meteorologists have created a tool that scores risk for tropical hazards such as flooding and wind. Any potential impacts to the U.S. may not happen until the end of this weekend or later, but the southeast coast, including Florida, might be in for another round of tropical cyclone weather.

Burst of Cold Air Raises Freeze Alerts

A surge of cold air following a frontal boundary will sweep across the eastern U.S. this week, bringing sub-freezing overnight temperatures to millions for the first time this season. Protect your assets from burst pipes with MonarchView technology, designed to proactively monitor conditions and prevent costly damage, so you can avoid the hassle of cleanup. See latest freeze advisories below.

The Cost of Climate Change

After essentially back-to-back billion-dollar weather disasters with Hurricane Helene and Milton, the cost of climate change is slowing down response times and support volume. Each of the last 4 years has been the most expensive for FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund. Between growing wildfires and landfalling hurricanes, the frequency and intensity of such weather events are making it more challenging for federal agencies to respond fast enough as resources are stretched so thin.

Climate Change Drives Socioeconomic Strains in Southern Africa

Continual bouts with extreme weather driven by climate change have left many African countries, especially across the southern tier of the continent, fighting uphill against water security, living conditions, poverty, and weak governance. These issues are becoming worse and raising tension between communities and countries as weather disasters continue to displace millions each year.

Chilly United Kingdom to see Burst of Warmth.

Set between two systems bringing cool and rainy conditions across the United Kingdom, London and much of the U.K. will see a shot of heat on Wednesday, with temperatures jumping as high as 22°C (72°F). The break will be welcomed as the rest of the week will be followed by cooler-than-average temperatures with even colder air coming this weekend, including parts of central and eastern Europe with some overnight lows dropping below freezing.

Southeast Asia Waters Fueling Powerful Tropical Cyclones

Seas off the coast of southeast Asia are warmer than most water bodies across the globe — where tropical cyclones are forming or staying intact much closer to the coast than ever before. More cyclones are falling to the warmer waters north of traditional impact areas. The result is that more powerful cyclones are impacting areas that are much more densely populated — including the cities of Bangkok, Vietnam’s Hai Phong, and Yangon, in Myanmar. Flooding, damaging winds, and landslides have contributed to many failures in infrastructure directly related to the increase in tropical activity.
