The Impact of Weather on Wildfire Smoke and What This Means for our Health

One of the biggest health threats from wildfire smoke comes from microscopic particles that can travel deep into our lungs. As the smoke gets worse, the concentration of particles in the air increases and can severely affect the respiratory system, and even worsen lung disease and chronic heart disease. Hurricane Nicholas

Tropical Storm Nicholas approached the gulf coast of southeast Texas on the evening of Sep. 13, 2021. The system briefly intensified just before landfall to a CAT 1 Hurricane as indicated by an 83 kt gust reported at a WeatherFlow station at Matagorda Bay, Texas. Landfall was reported around 12:30 am Sep. 14, 2021 just northeast of Galveston, TX. Flood and power outages risks are widespread, as the event is continuing to unfold across southeast Texas and southern Louisiana. Click HERE to read more.

Major Hurricane Ida

Major Hurricane Ida made landfall just to the west of Port Forchion, Louisiana just before noon on the 29th of August as a strong CAT 4 storm, on the 16th anniversary and just 45 miles to the west of Katrina. Click HERE to read more.

Tropical Storm Henri

Tropical Storm Henri made landfall near Westerly Rhode Island around August 22 12:15pm eastern time with steady winds estimated at 52 Kts. Power Outage and wind / tidal impacts were generally less than forecast (forecasts were quite intense leading up to landfall). Click HERE to read more.

Tropical Storm Fred

Fred’s official landfall occurred near San Blas, Florida @ 2:15p CT / 3:15p ET. Maximum winds at landfall were 65mph (56 Knots). TS Fred increased in strength up until landfall - a growing trend with tropical cyclone activity as the climate changes. The warmer waters are tending to offset the influence of the land interaction immediately before landfall. Click HERE to read more.

Tropical Storm Elsa

A preliminary analysis of available wind gusts from weather stations along the west coast of Florida compared to the Monarch model indicate most regions did not receive tropical storm winds >= 35 Kts. Click HERE to read more.
