Monarch Weather Weekly: December 15, 2024

Stormy South to Start The Week

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Monday through Wednesday across eastern Texas and the Mississippi Valley. Additional activity will develop along the coast from Florida to the Carolinas. With MonarchView, our hyper-local platform, you’ll get unmatched risk scoring and pinpoint insights for thunderstorms of any scale. Stay ahead of hazardous weather with our reliable alerting system, keeping you prepared no matter what.

Coastal Rain & Mountain Snow Continue in Northwest

The parade of storm systems continues to push into the West Coast as another front arrives on the shores of California, Oregon, and Washington to start the week.

The lower-elevation coastal areas will see additional rain while the mountains across the Sierra and Cascades rack up additional snow. MonarchView pinpoints precipitation accumulation amounts across varying terrain — some spots between Seattle and the Oregon/California border may reach as high as 3-4” of rain by Tuesday night. Meanwhile, mountain passes and peaks may see anywhere between 2-3 feet of snow from the storms over the last several days. Although the flood risk is generally low with modest rainfall rates, there can still be instances of severe storm hazards. This past weekend, San Francisco saw its first tornado warning on record! Damage in the tornado-warned area in San Francisco was ultimately determined by the NWS to be straight line wind damage, not a tornado.

Carbon Emissions Take Flight this Holiday Season

A flight from one coast to another usually emits a minimum of 300 kilograms of carbon dioxide — to offset this emission, you’ll need to go car-free for a month and a half. With more people taking to the skies than ever before, this has increased greenhouse gas emissions significantly and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Approximately 3 to 4 million Americans fly daily between Thanksgiving and New Year. Airlines are desperately attempting to reduce emissions by switching to more sustainable jet fuel while offsetting demand for fossil fuels with an evolution of battery electric and hydrogen-powered planes by 2050.

INTERNATIONAL STORIES:

Cyclone Chido Hammers Africa

The equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane, Cyclone Chido mauled the French territory of Mayotte and will spend the next 24 to 36 hours over the African mainland dissipating — as it weakens, it will still produce as much as 250 millimeters (10 inches) of rainfall through Monday evening or Tuesday morning across parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and portions of South Africa. Flooding remains a concern for these countries through the first half of the week.

Stellar Start to Ski Season in Europe

Early season skiers rejoice, it has been a tremendous start to the ski season across the Alps, mountains in Eastern Europe and even in Scotland's resorts Glencoe and Lecht opening up with great powder. Norway and Finland are also pacing well with snowfall frequency and amounts. A long stretch of clear skies and cold temperatures are expected generally over much of the ski resorts in Europe at least for the next week while the long-term forecast supports decent chances for a colder and snowier than average winter.

Indonesia Uses Cloud Seeding to Curb Disasters

The region has been slammed with flooding this year, and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency aims to reduce the intensity of rainfall within the region in an attempt to curb flooding and landslides. The region of West Java, Indonesia is now entering the rainy season, which typically sees a 20% jump in rainfall intensity. Cloud seeding provides the opportunity to redistribute precipitation to avoid intense flooding rains.
